Four Things Parents Should Know to Help Their Children Learn!
Chinese people value education, and parents all hope their children will become pillars of society. Regarding how to help children achieve a better learning state, opinions vary. Here, Dr. Wise shares the following four points summarized from years of teaching experience.
1. Don’t Take Over Their Tasks; Eliminate Dependence
Do not take over their tasks. When children encounter difficulties or make mistakes during learning, give them time to comprehend and realize on their own. Knowledge truly gained is what they absorb after correcting themselves. While observing students in class, we occasionally see parents anxiously accompanying them. When a student gets stuck, the parent immediately explains in Chinese or stands by with a dictionary. This causes students to develop a dependent mindset, expecting parental help whenever they encounter something they don’t understand or cannot do. This approach is not conducive to cultivating children’s independent and proactive learning ability.
2. Let Professional Teachers Teach; Start from a Young Age
Chinese people say, “Let another teach your child”—leave professional matters to the experts. Many of our parents are returnees from abroad or highly educated, with master’s or doctoral degrees, yet they do not teach their children English themselves because they worry their English may not be authentic and could lead the child’s English sense astray. Furthermore, professional foreign teachers embody their expertise not only in textbooks and teaching systems but also in specific teaching methods, adapting their instruction to the individual student’s aptitude and needs. All teachers at WISE Online Education are excellent native English-speaking teachers from America, Canada, UK and Australia.
3. Lead by Example; Influence Through Environment
Parents should lead by example in educating their children. Instead of pushing children into a good learning state and potentially creating conflict, it is better for parents to set an example by developing good habits of reading and studying at home. Children, being constantly exposed to this environment, will certainly also come to see learning as a lifelong pleasure.
4. Interest is the Best Teacher
In learning subject-based English, to achieve a better learning state, we hope parents can cooperate by reminding students to preview lessons beforehand and review them afterward. Additionally, increase opportunities for extracurricular exposure to original English learning materials, such as original English movies, English books, or, if possible, increase chances to communicate with foreigners in English. Let them know that English is a tool and cultivate their interest and hobby in it. Interest is the best teacher. Once subject-based English sets sail, children will, under the careful guidance of foreign teachers, steer their own helm and voyage far.

With Numerous K-12 Subjects, How Should Parents Choose?
Recently, many parents have privately messaged Dr. Wise, asking how their children should choose K-12 courses. Here, Dr. Wise offers some suggestions:
1. Elementary School Stage
The academic burden on Chinese students is relatively heavy in elementary school. Following the American curriculum setup, we only have Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. It is recommended that parents start with the Language Arts subject to build a foundation in subject-based English. If they have spare capacity, they can then add a Science or Mathematics course.
2. Middle and High School Stage
American middle and high schools offer a wide variety of subjects, reaching over 120 major and elective courses. For students who have not been exposed to American education or have not studied within the WISE Online Education system, we recommend taking English courses (Language Arts). They can choose courses focused on reading or those focused on writing and grammar.
3. Students Already Adapted to American Education
For Chinese students who have already adapted to American subject learning and are proficient in using English as a tool, they can choose the same rich array of courses as American students, including Science, History, Economics, Art, Computer Science, and even AP courses.
